June 4, 1994, my mom Tamika and my dad Ben tied the knot in front of family in friends. They have been married for 26 years and I know that there are more years to come.
I’m proud of them. Through my parents, I learned what it meant to be married. In a world where people barely make it a year after getting married. My parents shock others when they said they had been married for over 20 years.
When I hear people say their parents had only been married for a few years before they divorced it hurts me but I know that not every couple can stay together. They can however try to work past the issues.
No. I’m not saying to stay in an abusive relationship. If you are in an abusive relationship seek help and get out.
My parents have worked through many issues. I actually remember them arguing longer than me seeing them happy and I would sit in my room and cover my ears to try and not hear my mom screaming at my dad.
It was hurtful to hear, but after years and years of working it out, they stayed married. I was proud of them because it didn’t appear that they would stay married. I thought I would have to choose. But I never had to.
My parents love each other in a way I hope to when I get married. Because I only want to do it once.
Happy Anniversary Mommy and Daddy.
