I really enjoy being on social media, but I have one confession, I can be a little obsessive. Back when I was a teenager I was addicted to Instagram in the most unhealthy way. Since I was addicted I was always checking it and waking myself out of my sleep just to be on the app.
I had so much anxiety that I couldn’t focus. I eventually had to delete the app. Social media is very demanding and requires a lot out of you. If you are trying to build your way up, you can get lost.
Followers, likes, retweets, repins, and shares can make you feel good. The high that you receive from those instant gratifications are nice, but they don’t last long.
You can become obsessed with trying to be the best. The feeling of needing to do more can take over. This feeling can be more overwhelming if you see other people and they are doing great, while you are doing just okay.
I remember trying to get the most likes on an Instagram post. I also remember waking up at one in the morning to post pictures. I remember being so anxious opening the app to see if I got likes that it became hard to breathe. I think I even remember praying to get more likes at one point.
That was my low. I don’t wish that on anyone. The sad part about this situation, is that it can happen to anyone. If it is happening to you, know that you are not alone.
Many things can fuel your anxiety, social media can be one. Never underestimate the power of social media.
