The Daniel Fast is something my mom partakes in every year and for the past six years, I have avoided it. I have fasted before for one or two days. I only drank water during those times. Other times I have only eaten after twelve or after three. So fasting is nothing new to me. So you’re probably wondering why haven’t I’ve done this particular fast? Well…
The Daniel Fast is completely different than other fasts because it lasts for twenty-one days. During this time, you are only allowed to eat food that comes from the ground. That means no animals or animal by-products. So it’s vegan, right? No! It’s not vegan, you also can not have sugar. Think giving up sugar is easy? Ha, it’s not and here is why. Ever looked at the back of your favorite snack or processed food? Sugar, sugar and more sugar. The sad part is you can’t even taste it. This makes me mad because snacks you think are all natural and sugar-free are not.
But my mom had warned me before I got on board. She is the most disciplined person when it comes to fasting. She has dieted my entire life and would never cheat. I, on the other hand, am not as disciplined. So I decided to test how long I can go without my favorite foods. My mom told me she would be surprised if I lasted a week. At first, I wanted to prove her wrong, but after six hours, I knew that three days would be difficult.
But the fast isn’t all about food, it’s about growing closer to God. That’s the main part, but when you aren’t self-disciplined like me it’s hard to do so. I wanted to do both and also shed a few pounds too. My goal was to make it to a week and then go from there. I have never fasted like that before, so it’s wasn’t the easiest thing. In the end, I only lasted twenty-four hours.
The Lord knows I had good intentions and that I have never done this before. Even though I didn’t make it past a week I will still fast with my mom at night. She has gotten the whole family on board to doing night fasting. But if you are also fasting good luck with the Daniel Fast!
